dr. Vesna Jurčec


    D.Sc. Vesna Jurčec graduated in Geophysics with Meteorology from the Zagreb University in 1952 and the same year was employed in Hydrometeorological service as synoptic meteorologist. In 1959 she obtained the assistantship from Massachusetts Institute of Technology U.S.A. for graduate studies. Here she completed the M.Sc. degree in 1960 under the supervision of Prof. E.N. Lorenz, and left MIT for Los Angeles to continue her studies for Ph.D. At UCLA she was assistant of Prof. J. Bjerknes working with him in the project of El Nino. Her Ph.D. thesis was in Numerical Weather Prediction and she completed this thesis in 1964 under the supervision of Prof. M.G.Wurtele, and returned to Zagreb. This was only for a short period of time since in 1966 she left for UNDP mission in Centre for Research and Training in Cairo. In 1972 she returned to Zagreb to Hydrometeorological service working in Centre for Meteorological Research. After returning she became a delegate of our country in two WMO Commissions: CAS (for Atmospheric Sciences) and CBS (for Basic Systems). Last years until retirement in 1992 she was giving lectures in synoptic meteorology in the Geophysical Institute and supervising some diploma, M.Sc. and Ph.D. theses. After retirement she continue with the research work on some projects, particularly on the NSF joined project with Yale University, USA, The Adriatic Bora.
